As we settle in, the busboy brings the waters, and I cut to the chase. “So, I hate to crash the Sunday Funday vibe, but I invited you to brunch with an ulterior motive. I need a favor.”
She spreads her napkin on her lap with a raised brow. “What kind of favor?”
“I need you at next Monday’s board meeting. As you know, we lost an important account last month when Beaux Rêves in Paris went with a cheaper option. Obviously, they aren’t our only account, not by a long shot. But given how volatile the industry has been lately, I need to make it crystal clear to the shareholders that selling isn’t the right path. With the number of mergers and acquisitions going on, they’re seeing dollar signs, but quick money isn’t the answer. That’s where you come in.”
“You want them to hear from me because of my shares?” she asks, her brow furrowing. “We don’t have anything close to a majority.”
Though CJ inherited Sean’s share of the business when he passed away, that’s not why I need her at the meeting. CJ has a way of putting people at ease, of winning their trust and confidence. She’s a successful business owner in her own right—her accessories company Love Cycle Creations is growing by leaps and bounds every year. I nod. “Of course, but that’s not the only reason. I need to convince them that now is not the time to explore getting into bed with a huge multinational retailer. “On a much smaller scale, though. My company is tiny compared to Adored.”
“Size doesn’t matter.” I pause to wiggle an eyebrow for effect. “Well, in this case.”
A faint blush spreads on her cheeks. “You and the innuendo.”
“I do love innuendo. I also love Adored. That’s why I want to keep it the way it is—growing, profitable, and independent. I don’t want it swallowed by some faceless corporate giant.” A smile teases her lips for a moment and then disappears. I can’t read her at all, so I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting for an answer. “Please, CJ,” I add when she stays silent for a long beat. “I need you.”
“You need me,” she echoes, her brow smoothing as she sighs. She takes a drink of water, sets down her glass, and runs the tip of her tongue across her lips.
I watch her tongue move, wondering why I’ve never noticed how amazing her mouth is. She has the bee-stung lips of a cover girl, in a shade of pink so deep it brings to mind flushed, hot, intimate things.

Desta vez, ela trouxe além do seu famoso lirismo, jogos de palavras ,frases de efeito e carga emocional que beira o limite, ela veio com um livro denso e forte mostrando como uma mesma situação pode ter vários pontos de vista, como perdoar é difícil, como é complicado ressurgir das cinzas e como pode ser doloroso e quase impossível sair da escuridão.
Jasmine viveu a vida toda numa redoma , sob o controle constante e neurótico da mãe para fazer sucesso no meio artístico ,ela tem em Ray seu porto seguro e alívio na tristeza mas ao conhecer o tímido e isolado Elliot, garoto que sofre bullying constantemente na escola porem que tem um dom maravilhoso ao tocar seu saxofone, ela se depara com novos sons em sua vida.
Elliot não consegue acreditar quando a popular, perfeita e linda Jasmine se aproxima dele com sua doçura e otimismo e acaba se tornando a sua melhor canção de Jazz.

Conversei com duas amigas durante a leitura e é impressionante como cada uma que conversei foi tocada de uma forma diferente. Euzinha pobrezinha aqui fiquei espantada com a enxurrada de acontecimentos que inundou essa história musicalmente romântica e sofrida trazendo a tona a cidade de New Orleans e sua vida fervilhante ,mas não conectei muito com os personagens principais e algumas cenas não me agradaram, mas em sendo um livro de Brittainy eu sempre acabo amando o conjunto da obra.
Foi maravilhoso cada vez que eu lia um sentido diferente para a palavra Bars( no sentido de grades, de aprisionamento interno, de partituras, bares) e mais maravilhoso ver um personagem negro complexo e enigmático que não foi estereotipado nem caricatural e que mesmo mergulhado no lado mais que escuro da força conseguiu com muito apoio e amor retornar a superfície e respirar novamente.
Já soube que esse será o próximo lançamento da escritora aqui no Brasil em junho do ano que vem e melhor ainda soube que mantiveram essa capa, que transmite bastante a atmosfera da trama e toda sua “ginga.”

“Who knew things could be painful beautiful?”
When we talk about Brittainy C. Cherry, we talk about an emotional journey towards the perfect end and after you read this blurb there is no way to doubt what lies ahead, is not it?
This time she brought in her famous lyricism, wordplay, phrases of effect and emotional load that bordered on the limit, she came with a dense and strong book showing how the same situation can have several points of view, how forgiving is difficult , how it is complicated to rise from the ashes and how it can be painful and almost impossible to get out of the darkness.
Jasmine has lived a life span under a constant, neurotic control of her mother to succeed in the artistic world. She has in Ray her safe haven and relief from sadness, but by meeting the shy and isolated Elliot, a boy who is constantly bullied at school and has a wonderful gift when playing his saxophone.
Elliot can not believe when the popular, perfect and beautiful Jasmine approaches him with her sweetness and optimism and ends up becoming his best Jazz song.
Their friendship grows just like bullying and pressure on Jasmine to achieve stardom and in different tragic moments their lives will be transformed forever.
The book features striking and engaging secondary characters set in a plot that leads to the most callous of the readers to be moved and to us who are Brit's fans to wring a tight heart so that everything works out in the end.But I did not connect much with the main characters and some scenes did not please me, but in being a Brittainy book I always end up loving.
